Sophos SafeGuard Private Disk Encryption Software 

Sophos SafeGuard Private Disk creates an encrypted virtual disk drive by providing an additional hard drive on the PC. But in place of a real disk drive, it employs a single additional file. This file - called a volume file - stores the entire contents, securely encrypted, with an up-to-the-minute, fast algorithm. This ensures that sensitive and valuable files (e-assets) are protected as effectively as if they were in an "electronic safe".

The volume file that stores all contents of a PrivateDisk, can be saved on local hard disks, portable media (floppy, Zip or MO disks, CD-ROMs, DVD, memory sticks, flash memory cards etc.) as well as in networks.

File Protection through Users
With SafeGuard PrivateDisk, users have the benefit of protecting their own sensitive information: they can create their own PrivateDisks, activate them when required and store personal or work related files on them. Examples of such documents would be customer files, corporate strategies, employee records, mergers or product information.

For users, there is no difference in using a virtual or a real hard drive. They are able to create, save, move or copy files in the way they are used to. A PrivateDisk may be used by other authorized users and every user can operate several Private-Disks in parallel.
